A good friend of mine has an old article on Nude Friendly places in Second Life. But she’s not a Second Life blogger and its kind of gone without update for a very long time. So with my renewed interest in the subject, I’m going to take what she had and run with it.

So lets sit down for a cup of coffee and go through my thoughts
Pussycat_As_BabaI get that this is a ‘weird people’ topic to some. Maybe even a lot of people in Second Life. But bear with me on my thoughts.

When I was new to Second Life, naked avatars were everywhere. Mainland was full of people running around nude either in a liberated state or in some form of kink-wear. The simply nude and the naked; two very different communities, but each sharing that same space in the Second Life social dynamic. Some may know that I have at times been extremely critical of the latter of those two, as it usually occurred as a nude female in chains in an animalistic kneeling pose – highly misogynistic.

Nudity in Second Life seems to be a rarer thing now. The Terms of Service have not changed, but the Second Life community has. It is not all too different from any other fad I guess, including Neko – which was everywhere when I joined, and now its rare for me to find another Neko.

I’m hoping I can either stir up some interest, or get some help in finding places to go that I have overlooked.

As to why, well – its just a bit important to me, and I will explain that below.

I’ve taken my friend’s list, and modified it with my own thoughts. I am also seeking more entries and corrections. As I rejoin the idea of being an SL nudist, I’m struggling with where to go. So help me if you can. Including with nude places that I, as a neko, can’t go to so I don’t have to hassle through that myself.

So what is Second Life nudity, nudism, and nakedness all about.

Nudity
Basic nudity in second life is allowed on all ‘M’ and ‘A’ rated land by default. Only if the specific local location has a policy stating otherwise will it not be allowed. It is not an ‘abuse reportable’ offense to be nude on ‘M’ or ‘A’ land with one exception: Linden run venues that have clearly posted ‘No Nudity’ signs – such as infohubs. If any other venue does have a no-nudity policy, they can at most ban you.

When I write ‘basic nudity’ I intend to convey simply having an avatar who’s genital areas are visible: being nude, in a non-sexually themed manner.

It is this basic nudity, as something once present all around Second Life, that I miss encountering, and that I feel a connection to. For me it is about a self expression of an idealized state of being. Much as my being a Neko is all about an imagined self, or inner self, as having a catlike personality (and I think I can hold up to that claim: I tend to be a rather solitary person, I claim spots that I occupy on a ‘time’ basis, I’m particular about grooming, and some other traits).

I came to Second Life to explore that ‘inner me’ that I could not easily explore in real life. Its about finding your inner self – expressing a truer self image. Most people are, sadly, not very introspective. They don’t question themselves, their own actions and motives, and the reasons for why they do what they do. They just presume they are what they are and their choices are their own. But that is not me, I live to explore my self. So when I came to Second Life I wanted to see if I could use it as a path to better self expression. The true inner self, is a journey. That journey led me to realizing myself as a Neko avatar – as it is an expression of a catlike spirit (have I blogged about that before?). It also led me to realizing I was Rastafari. But one of the reasons I came here, was to explore aspects of my sexuality and sense of body. I quickly realized I was not here for the sexual stuff, but at the same time that I really did relate to the nudity. Often the two are either tightly interwoven, or militantly separated out.

Nudity, is my idealized self. The idea of desiring to be able to live life ‘naturally’ and in my skin. I do find it very sensual, often erotic – but see no problem with this, as that too is natural. I enjoy ‘being in my skin’, but I’m actually adverse to ‘trying to create a charged atmosphere’.SLNudists

Nakedness
The following is my own thinking, but I’ve seen it echo’d by others as well. That being that ‘Nakedness’ differs from ‘Nudity’ in that ‘Nakedness’ is more about exhibitionism – the idea being to make a ‘prurient erotic statement’ out of being unclothed. The difference here is more in the intent than in the perception. Some people will view any avatar that is nude as being ‘erotic’ and ‘sexually themed’. Some people will say that about anyone not wearing a burqa…

So I find it a lot more useful to suss out the ‘communication intent’ of the person who is nude. Some of them are obvious about this by including things that only an SL avatar could: extra genitalia, aroused or climaxing states, unusual ‘deposits’ being emitted or present on the body, etc… Others you’ll notice by their profiles or their actions. The ‘Naked’ individual is trying to get you and/or themselves turned on. The ‘Nude’ person might be feeling just as sensual or erotic – but they are not propagandizing it. ‘Naked’ is about putting on a show, ‘Nude’ is about a state of being.

The state of acting ‘Naked’ as I am defining it here, is perfectly allowed in any public place on ‘A’ rated land, but is only allowed in private on ‘M’ land. This in fact is one of the two distinctions between ‘M’ and ‘A’ (the other having to do with violent themes).

NaturistResort

This location actually does not allow my normal avatar, because I am a Neko (cat ears and tail). They claim a policy of ‘like real life’ while then allowing mermaids.

Naturist
Naturism is a very specific political concept. Naturism is about Nudity, but a specific limited scope take on it. Where the term ‘Naturism’ comes up, Nudists are very keen on a set agenda of an anti-sensual nude state of being. If one is feeling sensual, that emotion is to be suppressed or denied. This is also often stated under the more positively worded concept of ‘body acceptance’ – the idea of accepting the body as it is. But even here that comes with ‘as long as it is not too attractive or in an aroused state’.

My own opinion is that Naturism arises as a reaction among those who feel a kinship to the notion of nudity, but fear retribution over the expression of their feelings. This is not unwise… public nudity is criminal in many places in the real world. It can leave you with a life long ‘offender status’ in some places, and death in others. In very few places is it accepted in ‘set aside private locations’, and in much fewer (almost none) is it generally minimally tolerated.

So in the real world the reaction of a Nudist to make a strong claim against sensuality makes sense. With a desire to make nudity seem even less sensual than being clothed. Though this has also copied itself into Second Life, where it is debatable whether or not it is as needed – we do tend to carry out real life thinking with us into second life.

I am NOT a fan of Second Life Naturists. I find them overly hostile people. Their sims are too restrictive with an often ‘human avatar only’ policy – not even allowing ‘hybrid’ avatars like Nekos and Fairies. Though for random reasons one major one allows Mermaids – revealing this policy to just be an issue of personal biases. Like real life Naturists they have an aggressive ‘stance’ they push about nudity, but if you search around their sims you will find a lot of sex furniture hiding in semi-plain sight. They have what they actually feel about nudity, and what message they push.

I gather I hit a nerve with the above section, as the day I published this, it got chain reblogged across a couple of nudist blogs. No comments, just reblogging. I imagine comments on my opinion of naturism are pending people hashing out their thoughts, about my thoughts. I would posit looking up some google searches of nudist events before criticizing too harshly my opinion that naturists are taking an active stance over something everyone else sees as sensual. The most common result I get back is an annual event of strippers, doing explicit poses, hosted at a naturist resort. This tells me that… there’s a bit of a double message going out. But again, I have no problem with seeing the nude form as arousing. I disagree with those who claim it is not, the Naturists. However I concede that I understand why they hold this view. The very things they fear a backlash for, keep me from safely exploring nudism outside of Second Life. So I get it, but I also won’t hold my tongue on it.

Types of Nude venues in Second Life

Places that accept nudity in Second Life fall into a number of different trends, based on the context of how someone is nude there, and who is allowed to be there or allowed to be nude.

On this Nudity front you have the question of what kinds of avatars are allowed to be in a place, and whether or not nudity is ‘begrudgingly allowed’, welcomed, preferred, or required. This largely revolves around how comfortable a place is with nude people being around, and how it sees the nudity as either an expression of self or a recreation of a real world nude dynamic. A naturist venue for example might restrict itself to human-only avatars because it is not about self-expression/exploration but recreation of a real world naturist community dynamic. By contrast a ‘furry’ venue might allow everyone to be nude because it is about self-expression and idealization of oneself but has little desire to be rooted in the visitor’s real life limitations.

On the Naked front the issue is more about who is nude, what role they are put into as a result, who has power because of this, and often who is specifically not allowed to be nude. This can run the range from places that require one gender to be nude, require specific roleplay from those nude, require specific sexual conduct from those nude, and similar rules. All somewhat ‘theme related’ rules designed around varying sexual fantasies. A ‘Clothed Male Naked Female’ venue for example would restrict nudity by avatar sex because it is enacting a specific voyeur/exhibition fantasy. On the other hand a ‘Gorean’ venue would restrict and require of nudity to mostly-female slaves, and carry it forward to requiring submissive poses and limited use of chat because it is fabricating a fetish of absolute male privilege.

Some of these community concepts are obviously highly incompatible with each other. But at the same time Second Life being what it is, it is very easy to find things like Gorean art on the walls of homes in a Naturist community.

And there are also places that blend many themes, somewhat by intent. There is at least one very popular multi-sim “nude world” concept that results in ‘nudity’ being side by side with ‘nakedness’ all the time, and wherein it is not all that difficult to discern which is which and as such not create conflict: somewhat proving the point that the barriers other communities create are not as needed as they think.

Nudity Pervs
If you ever visit a real life nude beach, you might find some of these guys outside. A few beaches near San Francisco have had this issue before where guys with telescopes and high power camera would perch themselves on the cliffs above and watch. Google up some ‘public nudity’ stuff and you will find the results of what they’re up to.

You would think that, in SL, these guys would just join in on the nude venue with everyone else because it is just your avatar right, not real life you?

But here they are:
NudityPervs
This venue has so many of them, you often cannot manage to render them all – camera angle for a screenshot being what it is, the above was only about a third of them, with me there above the word ‘much’. And this place is not alone in having this problem… In fact this venue has a message warning people specifically to not do what they are all doing here…

Interestingly, I only find them in nude venues that have malls (I blurred the mall in the background of this shot because the billboards were explicit). They use the mall as ‘cover’ – to convince themselves that we might believe they’re actually just here shopping. But they never move, and other than telling you how ‘hot’ you are in IM every few seconds, they never chat…

It makes me wonder what would happen to the traffic in places like this if they split the parcel up into two pieces and make it so you couldn’t see people in other parcels… Because just in front of the camera here is the ‘line’ that you have to be naked to cross or risk getting tossed (and yet about 1/5th of the people on the other side of the line are not only not nude, they’re not even in beach wear.

Curiously again… I never see issues like this in furry places. Furries in SL, as much as people who are not furries dislike them, are much better behaved than this (in fact in all my years in SL the only furry griefers I have ever met were not furries except for when they went out to cause trouble – they’d use human avatars any other time. I’ve met a number of rude furries, of the ‘poor social skills’ variety, but never a badly behaved furry, and the rude ones – far fewer than among any other avatar type except tinies. Tines (miniature furries)… well every last one of them I’ve met has been uncannily nice and well behaved – almost like they go to ‘tiny camp’ and come out nice). I’m sure there must be bad furries somewhere, but in 6 years I’ve managed to not find them. Unfortunately for me, my furry avatar is a ‘costume’, but my neko one is a ‘me’…

If I could actually choose my avatar in SL, I’d be a tiny, and if not that, a furry. But unfortunately I find our avatars tend to pick us, rather than us picking them.

SelfPortraitofaSelfPortrait

This is not about sex or sex venues

Following up on the nudity pervs, are the people who drop into nudist venues and start demanding ‘party favors’… Second Life is full of people who come in and think everyone else there is there to perform for them. And to be fair to them – a lot of “clubs” in Second Life over the past few years have changed the layout to include a stage everyone faces, and on that stage is whoever’s iTunes playlist we’re all listening to, and somebody else who’s greeter spam script we’re being subjected to… whilst around them are a series of AFK bots on dance poles that we are supposed to ‘tip’ for their hard work in being AFK and letting a prebuilt scripted animation run on their avatar while they are not even actually there…

But that’s not everybody. We’re not all here to serve “you” (not you the reader, but this person popping into places demanding service).

But it is a particular issue if your avatar is nude and / or you are in a nude venue. These folks will start demanding you perform acts for them or otherwise ‘show them a good time’.

So… “my” (as in anyone running around in SL nude) purpose is not to serve “you”, and I am not your “sexy time”. The person who is nude in Second Life is that way for their own reasons, and unless the place you are in actually is a ‘sex sim’ don’t start hassling people for services (and if it is such a sim, check the theme first – hassling people for services is the theme in some of those places, but not all of them by a wide margin).

Don’t presume a Second Life nudist is there for the “sexy time’ unless they’ve left you other signs that they are seeking that kind of attention, such as hanging out in an SL pickup joint somewhere other than the landing spot. As for those landing spots – we all know that not everything rezzes instantly in Second Life, and even once it does it takes time to get your bearings and figure out if you’re in the kind of place you intended to visit.

Just because a location in Second Life says something in search that you think is a give-away, doesn’t mean I or others visiting will know that. Imagine my horror, as a multi-racial person, the first time I landed in an ‘interracial sim’ in Second Life: which is basically Second Life code for a racist themed sexual-assault roleplay venue. Whereas I was (and still am) hoping to find a spot where I could chat and get/give support from other people who exist on multiple sides of the race-lines of the countries they live in.

Other times people might not know what is a specific, known term, but only within that community. I had no idea that a certain 3-syllable word that begins with ‘bukk’ was not just general-anime until the first time I teleported in – yes that one is on me… (and we could go on with this one, such as how Neko in Second Life was, at least a few years ago, something relating to 90s grunge music, which is not at all anime-neko nor comicbook Catwoman nor Egyptian deity).

Its best to just let people get off the landing spot before you presume they’re there for the theme.

So Don’t hit on me
In the short time since I have returned to nudity in Second Life I have discovered one of the things that helped to drive me off of it the first time. Some people, not all of them male, just don’t get it that I am not here for the sex. I said that just above, and now again.

Don’t hit on me.

Don’t hit on any nudist in Second Life, especially if you want to keep enjoying the site of us, unless as noted above – they’re giving signals by their actions, words, or clear statements in their profile.

And well, don’t hit on me. You will not find a path to getting to know me through that route.

My Spirituality in Nudity
For me, nudity, even public nudity, is a spiritual thing. I suspect that confuses a lot of people. We are born nude, we are created nude, we return to a natural state when this life ends.

Thomas Hobbs, in writing Leviathan in the year 1651, noted an interesting point in chapter 20. To judge the body as shameful, is to judge Jah’s creation as unworthy. Hobbs was trying to make a point about the divine right of Kings being an absolute authority. And yeah… him making a point about wearing clothes being original sin as the reason for Kings makes no more sense to me than it probably does to you. Basically, he reads like he was filling in words to have a large enough book… But the point actually makes sense:

To these places may be added also that of Genesis, (Gen. 3. 5) “You shall be as Gods, knowing Good and Evill.” and verse 11. “Who told thee that thou wast naked? . . . Whereupon having both eaten, they did indeed take upon them Gods office, which is Judicature of Good and Evill; but acquired no new ability to distinguish between them aright. And whereas it is sayd, that having eaten, they saw they were naked; no man hath so interpreted that place, as if they had formerly blind, as saw not their own skins: the meaning is plain, that it was then they first judged their nakednesse (wherein it was Gods will to create them) to be uncomely; and by being ashamed, did tacitely censure God himselfe. And thereupon God saith, “Hast thou eaten, &c.” as if he should say, doest thou that owest me obedience, take upon thee to judge of my Commandements?

For me, the nude form is a spiritual form. Yes it is also a sensual, in fact erotic form. And these are all by intent, by design. By Jah will. We are made to love each other, to strive for community, caring, and an appreciation of the beauty of life and the beauty within each other and ourselves. There have in fact been faith communities over the centuries focused on this very point. So I for one see not only no conflict between exploring a sensual embrace of nudity and my sense of spirituality, but instead see these as intertwined and striving towards the same goal.

A strict human only rule – making the place very unwelcoming, with a sole exception for mermaids that stay under the water. This place is a large number of connected sims so it is regrettable that they have such a restrictive policy. They have their own blog, and there is a related journal blog of nudist happenings in SL. While the people have been friendly when I have visited on alts, they have also told me I am not welcome unless I change my avatar when approaching them on my main.

Roleplay in a somewhat ‘exploitation themed’ Amazon Rainforest. Sexualized nudity is not the intended theme, but its all over the place. I wrote a whole blog article on my mixed feelings over this sim. As many of you know, I am a quarter Amazonian-Indian – from the Peruvian mountain area. I know that’s about as exotic as a Martian to Americans, but its a common ethnicity in Peru.

This used to be the one and only Linden run Infohub in Second Life that allows nudity. The sign banning nudity was removed in 2010. It was there, then it was gone – no one knows why. Until recently even the Zindra Infohubs that are in the middle of nudist joints and sex clubs, had ‘no-nudity’ signs (gone when I re-checked in Dec 2015). Don’t abuse the privilege here, but if you like hanging out in Infohubs, this is the one you can be nude in. DO NOT wander into the nearby Shelter club while still nude – they are strict about not allowing nudity despite being on ‘M’ land (I mention this because the Shelter club originally built the Isabel Infohub before turning it over to Linden Lab back when there was a program for residents to build these).

The Adult infohubs did not allow nudity as recently as 2013 when I last specifically checked. 2015 when I write this – I hadn’t bothered to recheck in 2 years because for the first 4 it was banned. They now no longer have signs banning nudity. So if you like hanging out nude in a crowd of AFK people, newbies, and random whatever – you can. These spots are always crowded, unlike ‘M’ and ‘G’ infohubs. You may need to tweak your graphics down to avoid crashes. Spammers will try to send you junk and bad objects in these a lot.

Nudity is specifically called out in the estate rules as allowed but not encouraged. London used to run an adult sim, but they are all ‘M’ now. This is a newbie zone, and features all types of avatars, so keep the nudity non-sexual here or the privilege may be taken away. Otherwise this is your chance to be that lone nude person in a large crowd (so it is probably only going to appeal to people into a ‘naked’ theme, hiding themselves as ‘nude’.

This has become one of my main hangouts. Before the new owner took the place in mid-2016 I kept getting guys who would hit on me and not stop when asked. But since the new ownership the place has come alive with a lot of community, a better design for sailing, and the males are sociable folks. It does have ‘pickup joint’ as a part of the theme so people will ask, but now they’re polite and stop when told you’re not there for that. And now there is also plenty to do other than just the pickup scene. Its a great place to sail a boat, or to sit down for some engaging conversation. And if, unlike me, you ARE looking for a pickup joint, it is also good for that as the current community is nice.

What I will and will not add to this list.
PLEASE send me any more places you know of, as well as any corrections to places listed above – I found several of my friend’s SLURLS were no longer valid when going through this, and they’ll likely change again in time. Below I will cover the rules over what kinds of places I will add to this list, as well as what I mean by the “Style of Nudity” because the terms there are just my own made up definitions.

I will add to this list any sim which fits the above definitions for nudity, naked, or naturist venues.

However I will NOT accept locations that are based in some form of bigotry. Any place that references ‘plantations’, ‘gorean’, or is otherwise highly derogatory of real life races, genders or sexes… is off the list.

I have some signs people with nude friendly venues can put on their land:
NudeOnlyAndClothingOptionalSignshttps://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/Clothing-Optional-and-Nude-Only-Signs/8349227
These are $15L for the set of both, and come as Copy/Trans, plus two texture standalones that are Copy/Mod in case you want to use the image in your own sign design. Clicking them will give someone a copy of the signs (but not the standalone textures) and ask if they want to open a website link to this website.

If you get these signs, please tell me about your venue so I can add it to this list here. In fact if you don’t get these signs, please also tell me so I can still add you to this list here.
